Charlie 5.5 to 6

This post is, unfortunately, out of place. This should have been placed after the June 2018 post as Charlie turned six on June 19, 2018. But I didn’t realize it had been skipped until now. I’m just glad it wasn’t forgotten all together! So here goes…

five and a half
to
six
(December 19 - June 19)

In December, Charlie had his IEP Evaluation with Mrs. Jones. He officially tested out of services; he no longer qualified for speech therapy. This was great news and spoke mounds to the progress he has made. We are so grateful to the whole system the district provides (and even starting from Kids on the Move)! Having such support and resources was such a blessing to us.

Charlie went through a phase where he liked to pretend that his middle name was Mr. Rocketship. Charlie Mr. Rocketship Gruber.

Charlie is at the top of his class, academically. He is a natural when it comes to school work.

He is obsessed with the school learning computer program called Lexia and constantly wanting to advance to new levels. Each level is themed by a different country; he loves talking about the globe and where the countries are thanks to the different country levels on Lexia. He especially liked the Paris, France level. He said he wants to save his money so he can go to Paris, France, all thanks to that being his favorite level on Lexia. He plays so often that he has caught up to the level his cousin, Mya, is on. She is like four years older than him.

Charlie's perspective on the world

This year we learned that Charlie has really bad spring allergies! It was horrible. Charlie came down the stairs one morning with terribly puffy, watery, and itchy eyes. He didn’t notice at first, but Jason and I did our best to hide our giggles. After breakfast when Charlie went up to get dressed and do his hair, he finally saw himself in the mirror and started crying! “Oh no...I don’t like how I look.” The poor guy. We opted to keep him home from school and he was grateful. Over the next couple of days he really improved, but the itchiness and watering would continue for the rest of the month. We gave him some drugs to help. Because of this incident, spring has become his least favorite season.

much improvement by the next day

Charlie started sharing a room and bunk bed with Colson. We made this transition to open up the nursery before the baby was born. Charlie slept on the top bunk. They were both so excited! It definitely became harder for both boys to go to sleep, just wanting to chat and giggle and play.

learning the rules of the bunk bed

He finally learned how to snap his fingers, thanks to some inspiration and education from Cason Watts. Charlie was stoked about that.

While eating his meals, Charlie will save his favorite things for last.  He cried this morning because I gave him eggs and Apple Jacks and already put the milk in the cereal. He was concerned the cereal would go soggy because he still had to eat all of his eggs before he could eat the cereal.

Charlie loves playing soccer with the Lindon Rec team. He is playing with his best bud, Roman. He is very into it and very involved. He kind of dances and jumps on the outskirts of the play, but is very attentive and does well on defense. By the end of the season he improved a lot and came to really love his team and his coach. He was sad to say goodbye. He wants Coach Brent next time, too.

He loves having his weekly Thursday play dates with Roman (plus seeing him at soccer practices and games since they are on the same team). He will often play with Kenyon Proctor, a friend from the ward, about once a week. He will ride his bike over there by himself, or Kenyon will come to our house. Colson loves to tag along, too. Colson is bummed when they go to Kenyon’s house because he is not old enough yet to be invited.

This is so random, but Charlie and Colson LOVE the Robert J Debry signs next to the freeway. Charlie gets a kick out of them. He will always notice them, and will talk about and draw them. It is hilarious.

It was a hit!

His party was actually the day before his birthday because Dad had to leave the day of. So for Charlie's actual birthday, we invited family to dinner at Pizza Pie Cafe and then our house for cake.
