We started the year off in Riverton (I posted about that in the Christmas post) and we came home the day after New Years. Our boys were in complete depression of being home and missing the cousins and sleepovers. Charlie cried for several days when going to bed at night.
The boys continued their soccer games. Both teams did great and I believe they were both undefeated the entire season! Colson made a few goals and Charlie made two goals in the season. It was wonderful and very exciting!
The new program, Come Follow Me, began for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This also started the new two-hour church schedule. We were SO excited!
I got into the trend of Tidying Up with Marie Kondo. It became a Netflix sensation and gave me inspiration for home organization. It was very fun and motivating.
We had an Arbon celebration for Camry’s birthday. It was going to be a birthday dinner combined with Jason’s birthday, but he got horribly sick! He came home before noon on Friday and was in bed all day in such stomach pain. The next day he was still in bed, still sick. He threw up. Still sick. He had very bad back pain. He went to the doctor in the evening and the doctor said it was a bad case of the stomach flu. The doctor gave him a muscle relaxant (essentially stomach relaxant) and he finally felt some relief that night and the next day, but he was still tired and weak and not feeling 100%. He was well enough to return to work on Monday. You know it's bad if Jason feels like he has to go to the doctor!
The new Bachelor season began for Colton Underwood. Camry and Kim were invited each week to watch, and Kyle joined sometimes too. It was a lot of fun and was a roller coaster of a season...just how we like it!
We had a playdate with Roman of playing in the snow and building snowmen. We had some great snow! It was so cute, notice all of the snowmen have some kind of umbrella or covering to shield them from the sun so they wouldn't melt.
And then it was Jason’s birthday! He turned 33! George and Nancy tended the boys that evening while I took Jason to dinner at Asado. The food was really good and the place was empty for the first 20 minutes! It was pretty neat! After dinner we went to the movie Aquaman...sadly, it was the only movie that worked with our timing. Again, we had the complete theater to ourselves! That is what you get going on a weekday at the AMC Theater in Provo. Other birthday celebrations included Sunday dinners. We had the Grubers over for a sous vide tri tip dinner, and the Arbons over another evening for sweet chili lime chicken.
The movie-of-choice in the van during the month was Newsies. The boys just loved it! Jason and I loved hearing them sing to it in the car, and we would frequently hear them singing it at home, too.
January began a new era for our family...SKIING!! We had some really good snow this year. (Check out this YouTube video Jason made of our 2019 ski season!) Jason took Charlie for his first time skiing. We surprised him one Friday afternoon right after he got home from school. Jason took Charlie to Sundance because of their free rope tow after 2:30 pm. It helps too that Sundance is a literal 17 minute drive from our house! (Don’t love the crazy hike up to the rope tow, though). We were hopeful and anxious as to how Charlie would like skiing. We wanted it to be as positive as possible. We hoped he would love it, and HE DID! He LOVED it! Jason was able to tell that first day that Charlie honestly is naturally very good at skiing. He loves going fast, he can turn and stop easily, and he enjoys pushing himself through harder terrain like trees and banks. They went again the next day (Saturday), this time bringing me and Colson. Kim and Kyle tended Jonah. We decided to get the boys a season rental package from Nymans so we could just keep the skis at home for the season. That was such a game changer, to eliminate the extra time-suck of renting skis each time! So worth it! We are also so glad that Jason went just with Charlie that first day. That way Charlie could get the experience he needed to be mostly independent while Jason helped Colson on his first day. Charlie was also able to be an encouragement and motivation to Colson, rather than possibly having two frustrated kids learning at the same time with split attention. We are so glad we did it the way we did, and we were glad to see that Colson also did well his first day!
The next Friday was a great snow day! Jason went during the day with John at Brighton, and I brought the boys up after school for the 4:30 night skiing time. Brighton has free skiing for kids under 10 years old with a paying adult, which is amazing! That totally makes up for the longer drive to Brighton...that and the really fun runs. They LOVED skiing at Brighton! I did not ski with them this time. I stayed in the lodge with Jonah and came out to watch for a bit on the bunny hill. They did so well! When they were done skiing, we had dinner there at the lodge.
We were back at it the next day! This time we were back at the rope tow at Sundance for their afternoon session. We got a sitter for Jonah and I brought my snowboard. My snowboard turned out to be a joke! The rope tow is a small, nearly flat hill. I was up and down so much getting my board on and off, it just wasn’t worth it. By the time I had my boots strapped in, the boys were already down the hill. So I didn’t get to ski with them anyways. And then trying to help them catch on to the rope whilst on the snowboard myself was nearly impossible. (That prompted us to purchase ski gear for me the next week. Jason also ordered new ski gear for himself thanks to a discount connection). The boys had fun, but they were less impressed with the free rope tow hill since experiencing the fun of Brighton. They wanted to move on to the lift. We also had a lot longer tow line thanks to it being Saturday. We ended up just cutting in towards the bottom of the hill with any empty handles (which is only allowed depending on the staff member you have manning the hill).
The next Fright night we went night skiing all together. We rocked the x96 deal ($25 per adult and free kids). We dropped Jonah off at my parents. We skied the bunny hill many times and then braved the Majestic lift. That run proved much more difficult for the boys, but luckily they weren’t completely traumatized. We were surprised it didn’t squash their spirits. I got knocked down by a snowboarder. We decided to head back to the bunny hill and they were still loving it. We skied so late that we didn’t have any time to eat at the lodge, so we picked up Little Ceasers on our way back to pick up Jonah.
While skiing was a major part of our month, we were also busy with other things. Jason started another season of Timpanogos soccer. This time he enlisted Kaleb Thompson. They did great!
Colson got a bad cold, and then I got one as well. Charlie and Jonah then also got a small version of it.
Charlie had Penguin Daddy Day at school. He was very excited and Jason had a good time.
The boys have been enjoying trying to do their own hair, thanks to Oliver’s inspiration over Christmas. I even caught them with scissors trying to cut their hair! Luckily I found them before any real damage was done.
Amy continued with her near weekly visits, bringing baby Tess along with her. We watched Beauty and the Geek and the new season of This Is Us.
Jason took the boys sledding at the nearby middle school.
My cousin, Felicia, had a bridal shower. I went to that while Jason took all of the boys to Grantsville to visit Richard and to pick up his new skis.
Colson had a field trip to the Bean Museum. He was very excited to go there since Charlie had been on a field trip there and had said good things about it.
And then suddenly we were looking at houses! We decided this was probably the year. We knew we needed to move before we had any more children (not that it was happening soon, but we wanted to do that well in advance) and we were totally out of storage space before needing to kick our van out of the garage. We were becoming the garage packing family. Little did we know all of this casual house searching would move so quickly (as you will see in the coming months).
Here are more pictures from the month:
